WHAT ARE VISION DISORDERS?

There are different types of vision disorders and some people may experience more than one. Presbyopia and most cataracts are both results of aging. While presbyopia usually requires reading glasses or bifocals, cataracts can actually lead to blindness. The good news is that both conditions can be corrected. Implantation of intraocular lens implants to treat cataracts is the most common surgical procedure in the world with over 8.5 million procedures performed each year. Presbyopia treatment is much newer with a range of lens implants, conductive keratoplasty and laser procedures available depending upon your specific needs.

Nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism are all vision conditions that require people to wear glasses or contacts. They are not conditions generally related to aging. It is possible for someone to actually develop cataracts and presbyopia while already being farsighted and having astigmatism.
