WHAT IS FARSIGHTEDNESS?

Farsightedness, or hyperopia, is the inability to see objects that are close up. It occurs when light entering the eye focuses behind the retina, instead of directly on it. This is caused by a cornea that is flatter, or an eye that is shorter, than a normal eye. Many children are born with farsightedness, and some outgrow it as the eyeball lengthens with normal growth.

Farsightedness is measured in terms of positive diopters. Farsightedness of +4.0 diopters or greater is considered high, or severe. Farsightedness can be corrected with glasses.

In farsighted eyes, the eye is too short and light rays focus at a point behind the retina. Vision is best at a distance but usually not good at any single focal point.
